Social media platform strategy for small business connecting Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube and Pinterest to different customer journeys

Which Social Media Platforms Should Your Small Business Use in 2026?

Originally published March 2013. Substantially updated September 15, 2026. Rebuilt from a Facebook-only argument into a 2026 decision guide across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest and adjacent Google Business Profile.

The original version of this article made the case for why a business should have a Facebook Page. That was the right conversation for its time. It is not the question I would ask a small-business owner in 2026.

Today I would ask: who are you trying to reach, what are they trying to accomplish, where do they discover businesses like yours, where do they evaluate them, what kind of content helps them trust you, and what should happen after they engage?

Facebook can absolutely be part of that answer. But so can Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest and other channels depending on the customer and industry.

My framework is: CUSTOMER → INTENT → PLATFORM → CONTENT → CONVERSATION → CONVERSION → MEASUREMENT.

Choose the customer first.

Then choose the channel. Popularity is not strategy: the goal is not to be everywhere, it is to be useful in the places that matter.

Seven Platforms, Different Jobs

Facebook can absolutely be part of the answer. But so can Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest and other channels depending on the customer and industry.

PlatformBest strategic roleContent advice
FacebookLocal community, established consumer audiences, Groups, events, local awareness, retargeting and paid reach.Local proof, customer stories, useful updates, events and video. Do not assume Page followers organically see every post.
InstagramVisual brands, lifestyle, hospitality, beauty, fitness, retail, food, travel, creators and demonstrable work.Prioritize Reels, strong visual proof, carousels, Stories and creator-style content. Show the work.
TikTokDiscovery-led consumer categories, younger audiences, entertainment, food, beauty, fitness, education.Lead with the idea immediately. Native, useful and human. Skip the TV-commercial mindset.
LinkedInB2B, professional services, consulting, recruiting, technology, manufacturing, leadership and expertise.Publish useful expertise from real people. Founders and employees carry as much authority as the company page.
ThreadsConversation, commentary, founder voice, marketing/tech discussion and brands already active on Instagram.Ideas, observations, questions and timely conversation. Not Instagram with the picture removed.
YouTubeEducation, demonstrations, reviews, how-to, complex services, home improvement, technology, expertise.Build a library. Answer durable questions. Shorts for reach; longer video when depth is needed.
PinterestPlanning-oriented visual discovery: home, design, weddings, food, fashion, beauty, DIY, travel, ecommerce.Useful evergreen visual assets tied to pages or products people can act on. Discovery, not daily conversation.
Google Business Profile is not social media.

But it matters for local discovery and reputation. For a local business, do not treat social media as an excuse to neglect the place where high-intent customers are already searching.

Popularity is not strategy.

A residential roofer, restaurant, B2B machine-tool supplier, wedding planner and management consultant should not automatically use the same platform mix. The decision begins with customer behavior.

Customer, Not Channel

Start with who you serve and how they buy. The platform is downstream of the customer, not the other way around.

Native, Not Duplicated

Repurposing is smart. Blind cross-posting is not. Each platform has its own language.

Business Outcomes, Not Followers

Followers matter in context. Discovery, visits, leads, appointments, purchases and revenue are the scoreboard.

CUSTOMER, INTENT, PLATFORM, CONTENT, CONVERSATION, CONVERSION, MEASUREMENT

Seven Platforms and What Each One Is For

01

FACEBOOK: COMMUNITY, LOCAL VISIBILITY AND PAID REACH

Facebook remains important for many small businesses, especially when local communities, events, Groups, established consumer audiences and paid advertising matter. A Page provides a public business presence inside Meta's ecosystem. For local businesses, Facebook can be useful for customer stories, events, community involvement, service updates, useful video and social proof. Do not build the strategy around the assumption that every Page follower will organically see every post. Use Facebook as a business channel, not a free broadcast list.

02

INSTAGRAM: SHOW THE WORK

Instagram is a natural fit when the customer benefits from seeing the product, experience, transformation, personality or process: restaurants, hospitality, beauty, fitness, fashion, retail, travel, real estate and visual service businesses. Reels can help discovery. Stories can keep the business present with an existing audience. Carousels can teach. Show the work. Do not spend all your time making graphics that say you do the work.

03

TIKTOK: DISCOVERY REWARDS USEFUL, HUMAN CONTENT

TikTok changed the expectation for short-form business video. A business does not need to look like a television commercial: it needs an idea worth watching. Teach something. Show the process. Answer a question. Demonstrate the product. React to something happening in the industry. Tell a story. Show what customers misunderstand. TikTok's own business guidance emphasizes authentic content, vertical video, people, sound and delivering value or emotion quickly.

04

LINKEDIN: EXPERTISE IS THE CREATIVE

For B2B businesses, consultants, professional services, technology companies, recruiters, manufacturers and expertise-led organizations, LinkedIn can be much more important than a consumer social platform. The product may be knowledge, experience, trust, relationships, technical capability or leadership. A company page provides legitimacy and a publishing surface, but think about founders, subject-matter experts, salespeople and leadership as part of the distribution strategy. Expertise itself becomes the creative.

05

THREADS: CONVERSATION BEFORE CAMPAIGN

Threads has grown into a meaningful text-first network connected to the Instagram ecosystem. Meta has added features for creators and businesses, including profile links, link insights and additional discovery. Use it for observations, questions, opinions, industry reactions, short explanations, founder voice and conversation. If Instagram shows what you do, Threads can help show how you think.

06

YOUTUBE: BUILD A LIBRARY, NOT JUST A FEED

YouTube is different because useful content can continue working long after publication. A home-service company can explain common repairs. A lawyer can explain a process within professional rules. A software company can demonstrate a workflow. A manufacturer can show equipment. A consultant can answer a difficult question. A restaurant can show preparation and culture. Shorts can support reach; longer videos can support complex decisions. See social media video views for how to think about the numbers.

07

PINTEREST: USEFUL WHEN THE CUSTOMER IS PLANNING

Pinterest is not the first platform I would recommend to every business. But it can be highly relevant when the customer's behavior involves planning, inspiration and visual decision-making: home design, weddings, recipes, fashion, beauty, DIY, travel and products. The question is not whether Pinterest is as culturally loud as TikTok: it is whether your customer uses visual ideas to plan something they may eventually buy.

Industry-by-Platform Quick Guide

These are strategic starting points based on content fit and customer behavior, not universal ROI claims.

Do Not Copy and Paste the Same Post Everywhere

Repurposing is smart. Blind cross-posting is not. One useful idea can become many platform-native executions. See marketing frequency for how cadence and format mix work together.

Organic and Paid Social Should Work Together

Paid media buys attention. Your broader presence helps the customer decide what that attention is worth. An empty or abandoned profile can undo a great ad.

Organic socialPaid social
Builds proof, personality, community and content over time.Accelerates reach and can support specific campaigns quickly.
Rewards useful native content and consistent participation.Rewards clear offers, strong creative and audience discipline.
Cheap to try, expensive to sustain if nothing to say.Cheap to start, expensive to sustain if the experience is weak.
Compounds when the presence stays credible.Compounds when audiences and pixels are built with intent.
Fails when abandoned: an empty profile is a credibility problem.Fails when it points at a landing page nobody trusts.

AI Makes Content Production Faster, Not Every Platform Necessary

I use AI as a coworker: brainstorm topics, organize ideas, first drafts, variations, performance analysis and repurposing. That makes it easier to turn one strong business idea into several platform-native executions.

AI should help a small business become more useful and consistent.

It should not turn the company into a content factory with nothing to say. Increased production capacity is not a strategy: it is a temptation. See social media content saturation and AI image prompts for small business for how to use AI without flooding the feed.

Measure Business Movement, Not Social Activity

Followers matter in context. Likes matter in context. Views matter in context. But those numbers are not the business outcome. Different platforms will contribute differently. Measure the role the platform is supposed to play.

SignalWhat it tells you
DiscoveryImpressions, reach, saves, shares: how far the content actually travels.
VisitsSessions from social sources landing on the website.
MessagesDMs, comments, replies and inquiries directly on the platform.
LeadsForm fills, sign-ups and quote requests tied back to a social source.
AppointmentsBookings from social-driven visitors.
PurchasesDirect sales attributed to social or platform commerce.
Repeat customersWhether social presence helps retention, not just acquisition.
RevenueThe scoreboard everything else feeds into.
The best social strategy may use only two or three platforms.

Choose a primary platform. Choose a supporting platform. Add another only when there is a clear customer or content reason. Then build a repeatable content system.

Facebook + Instagram

Meta ecosystem for local community, established audiences, visual proof and paid reach.

TikTok + YouTube

Short-form and long-form video for discovery, demonstration, education and a durable knowledge library.

LinkedIn + Threads

Expertise, thought leadership, professional relationships and founder voice for B2B and expert-led businesses.

Pinterest + GBP

Visual planning discovery and adjacent Google Business Profile for local search intent alongside social.

The Takeaway

The original question was: why should my business have a Facebook Page? The 2026 question is better: which platforms help my customers discover, understand, trust and choose my business?

Facebook still matters. But it is one part of a much larger environment. Instagram can show the work. TikTok can create discovery. LinkedIn can demonstrate expertise. Threads can build conversation. YouTube can build a knowledge library. Pinterest can support planning. Google Business Profile can capture local intent.

You do not need all of them. You need the right combination for your industry, customer, content and business goals.

CUSTOMER / INTENT / PLATFORM / CONTENT / CONVERSATION / CONVERSION / MEASUREMENT. Choose the customer first. Then choose the channel.
